2024 February Newsletter

Hey!

MY QUICK UPDATES

  • Sorry I missed the newsletter last month. I got sick while on vacation so I was just taking it easy.
  • Also I have been slacking on getting YouTube videos done. I’m working on ways to fix this!

THOUGHTS, INSIGHTS, AND ADVICE

  • At the end of the day, the thing that pushes the needle forward is just doing the work. There is no sugarcoating it. If you’re trying to break into Machine Learning or complete an AI project, there is no trick, technique, or hack that will realize that goal for you besides getting the work done. Andrej Karpathy and Lex Fridman talk about this in this clip of a podcast episode.

RANDOM LEARNINGS, KNOWLEDGE, AND REMINDERS

  • In machine learning system design it is common to first use a simple, small model before applying a large, complex one like a neural network. The simple model is more efficient so you can use it to greatly reduce the amount of data even though it’s not as capable as the complex model. You can then give the reduced dataset to the more capable but less efficient complex model. For example, you can first use logistic regression to classify a document’s relevance. Configure it so it classifies documents as relevant even if they only have a tiny bit of relevance. This might reduce your dataset size from 1,000,000 documents to just 10,000 documents. Then you can use a neural network to determine the relevance of these remaining ones.

  • 88 Manim Animations in ONE Video – I can’t believe this almost has 10,000 views! It’s very motivating.
  • Break Into AI With Me – I also want to give a shout out to this video. I’m surprised it has 162 views. It probably means people are visiting my channel.
