Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual

Author: Jocko Willink

Rating:
4/5

Themes: Self-Help

Summary Sentence: A retired Navy SEAL officer’s life philosophy that’s based on the idea that discipline is the best way to reach your true potential.
Review: This highly motivational and short book cover’s the internal mindset and external practices that retired Navy Seal officer Jocko Willink uses to dominate his life so that you can implement them too. He advocates that discipline (getting yourself to do what’s important even when you don’t feel like it) is the best way to reach your true potential. The second section, “Actions”, is more practical than the first but I actually got more out of his first section, “Thoughts”.

Thoughts

  1. The Way of Discipline: There is no shortcut to achieving your goals and becoming the best version of yourself. There is only one way: Discipline.
  2. Why: One day you will need to face someone or something, and you will need to win. You will need to win for the sake of yourself and of others.
  3. Where Discipline Comes From: From within. You need to make the decision. It can’t come from being forced by someone else.
  4. Overcoming Procrastination – When and Where to Start: HERE and NOW. Stop thinking, dreaming, researching every aspect, reading, debating the pros/cons… and start! GET AFTER IT
  5. The Person You Can Control: Keep your focus on making yourself into who you want to become. Stop focusing on other people who you want to become.
  6. Mind Control: You have control over your mind. You just have to assert it. Simply do what you want to do.
  7. Weakness: You have weaknesses. Everyone has weaknesses, shortfalls, and flaws. So fight to improve them!
  8. Stress: First, detach and gain perspective. Then Resolve the stresses that you can and embrace the stresses that you cannot.
  9. Destroyer Mode: Push beyond your limits by changing your perspective. Use your emotions to override logic when it doesn’t make sense to go on. Use logic to override your emotions when they are telling you to quit.
  10. Until the End: Never let your guard down after finishing a task. There is always more to do and new obstacles that will appear. Once the external obstacles are destroyed focus on your internal ones.
  11. Application of Discipline: Discipline can seem like your worst enemy… but it’s your best friend. Simply do the tasks you don’t want to but know will help you.
  12. Questions: Question everything. Don’t accept anything as truth. Question yourself. Knowledge is the ultimate weapon – obtain it by questioning. Look it up, break it down, figure it out.
  13. Fight: Give everything, everything you’ve got. Do the extra rep, make the right choice, fight weakness and fear and time.
  14. Compromise: Externally, compromise to support cooperation. Internally… HOLD THE LINE – maintain discipline.
  15. Default Aggressive: Have an unrelenting will to win at all times. An unstoppable fighting spirit.
  16. Nature vs Nurture: Neither. Choose to become something greater. Choose to overcome nature and nurture.
  17. Fear of Failure: Remain afraid of failure but be horrified of being paralyzed by it and not making progress.
  18. The Warpath: Choose to always be preparing for and fighting wars. Always be moving towards a battle. Always be improving.
  19. Sugarcoated Lies: Succumbing to junk food only makes you weaker. You never need to eat it. Be stronger than the donut.
  20. Bad Instincts: The ultimate bad instinct is anything that says “You can stop now”. This is just a defense mechanism for your ego. It gives you an easy way out.
  21. Not Feeling It: Go anyway. Get it done.
  22. Regret: You will regret things. Learn from them and move on. Let the fear of regret fuel you to take action.
  23. Focus: Never lose sight of the long term goal. There is no shortcut. Do something to inch you closer every day. If you don’t then you’ll never reach your goal… you may even regress.
  24. Hesitation: Do not hesitate out of fear or discomfort. Take action. Go.
  25. Draw Fire: Step up. Lead. Be the one who people look to in negative situations. Put the weight on your shoulders. “Bring that pain to me – I can handle it when others cannot. When bad things are happening – I will be the one good thing – standing tall – that can be relied upon. I will bolster those around me. And the positive attitude will spread. And we will fight.”
  26. Good: Even when things are going bad, there’s always some good. Take the problem and turn it into something useful. It’s an opportunity for you to become tougher and stronger.
  27. Death: From death, learn to not waste your time and to appreciate what you have.
  28. Everyday: Do not take a day off and miss an opportunity to take a new shot at life. Everyday is a Monday. There are no weekends.
  29. No More: No more excuses. Impose discipline on your life NOW.
  30. Staying Motivated: This is impossible. Find the discipline instead. You know what you have to do so… MAKE YOURSELF DO IT.
  31. Me Versus Me: Focus on turning yourself into the best version you can. Stop focusing on other people and what they’ve achieved. It’s you against you.
  32. Remain Vigilant: People are defeated by tiny slips in discipline over time. Hold the line on the seemingly insignificant little things. They matter.
  33. Fear: When facing fear or discomfort you must confront it. Be Aggressive. Take action NOW. Step aggressively toward your fear – that is a step into bravery.
  34. The Darkness: There will be dark times in your life (Frustration, anxiety, failure, pain, conflict, unfairness, injustice). But even in the darkest times, as long as you keep fighting – you win.
  35. Overwhelmed: Moments when you’re overwhelmed is exactly the time when you need to fight harder and seize control. Assess the problems. Decide which you will attack first. Then Attack.
  36. Negative Talk From Negative People: Ignore and outperform. Keep working hard and getting things done while they keep gossiping and fall behind.
  37. Hold the Line: Live in defiance of going backwards in any aspect of life. Fight weakness, decay, and temptations as they creep in with instant gratification and comfort.
  38. Begin: When you wake up don’t give anything the chance to prevent you from getting started with your day
  39. Engage: Actively fight your weaknesses into submission.
  40. Laughter Wins: Despite of and to spite your sufferings, laugh and enjoy life. Remain cheerful.
